In addition to reliance upon bison and maize, the Lipan Apache also gathered wild foods, especially varieties of cacti and agave. They were probably transhumant, although this is an inference from documentary evidence rather than a generally accepted fact. It appears that there were semipermanent dwellings of wickiups near fields during sowing and harvesting, and portable tipi dwellings used when following bison herds. The Spanish described them as living in rancher ías, but also as living off bison. The Lipan were the most sedentary of the Apachean groups, for they planted crops, especially maize. For the most part, the Lipan were at war with the invaders until there were no longer enough of them left to fight. The missionization effort cannot be termed a success, for the missions were poorly supplied and their inhabitants often left to pursue subsistence activities only to return when supplies were again available in the missions. Prior to the 1700s there was a plethora of names used for the Apachean people of eastern New Mexico, western Texas, and the Panhandle it is likely, although not definitively demonstrated, that some of these (Trementina, Limita) were later called "Lipan." Unlike most Apache, the Lipan were missionized in the 1700s in the northeastern reaches of the Spanish empire, in the areas of Eagle Pass and San Antonio, Texas. governments from the first mention of them in the early 1700s to their virtual extinction in 1905. History and Cultural RelationsĪs with the other Apache groups, the Lipan were engaged in a protracted struggle over land use and settlement patterns with the Spanish, Mexican, and U.S. At their height, they probably numbered no more than five thousand, divided into about a dozen bands. A reasonable estimate is that there are fewer than fifty people alive today claiming Lipan ancestry as their primary ethnicity. Currently numbered with the Mescalero and Chiricahua, it is difficult to obtain precise numbers of Lipan. The contemporary speakers are adamant that it not be recorded or written, believing that if the Language is meant to survive them, then it will do so, but that it is inappropriate for people to interfere with a process directed by the Creator.ĭemography. Despite attempts to record Lipan Apache, it remains largely unknown in a scholarly sense. The Southern Athapaskan Languages are related to other Athapaskan languages spoken on the north coast of California and in the Pacific Northwest, and through parts of northern Canada and Alaska. As such it can be understood by speakers of other Apachean languages, although most of them maintain that Lipan speakers speak more slowly and with broader vowels than do speakers of other Apachean languages. Lipan Apache, still spoken by Perhaps two dozen or so people on the Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation, is a Southern Athapaskan language. In general they lived in very warm to hot climates night in desert areas, however, is usually cool and can be cold in the winter. Like most Apachean groups, they roamed over vast areas, but always they were reported in desert or coastal plains sites rather than in mountains, as were some other Apache groups. Most reports of Lipan place them either in the vicinity of bison herds or occupying river bottom lands. In the early eighteenth century, Lipan Apache were in central and western Texas, from approximately the Trinity River (east of present-day Waco, Texas) westward to the Pecos River, where they joined their Mescalero Apache "cousins." They were reported as far north as the Canadian River in the Texas Panhandle and as far south as the Santander area of Mexico. Archival documents, however, lead to an equally plausible explanation, since early mention (eighteenth Century) of Lipans is often spelled with one of the variations of "Lipiyane." L í í is the Apachean word for "horse," and ' iyane is the word for "bison" thus, their name could well have referred to their primary subsistence pattern: that of following bison herds on horseback. Usually, the name "Lipan" is said to have come from the name of a grand chieftain with a version of the suffix -nd é, "The People," appended. The following is a brief historical sketch reconstructed from archival documents and secondary sources. See the entry on the Mescalero Apache for all contemporary information. Anthropological fieldwork with Eastern Apache did not begin until Morris Opler's work in the 1930s, by which time the Lipan were virtually extinct. The Lipan Apache had ceased to exist as a separate tribe by 1905, when the last of them moved to the Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation in south-central New Mexico. He would not be the king people thought they needed, whom they would hail on Palm Sunday, a worker of wonders limited to the goods of this earthly world. Which is why he came down to save us from it - not in the way we would design which would be to opt out of death and thus trap ourselves in this sorry world forever, but to give us eternal life with him. The body, which is sacred because God created it good, is then subjected to rot. Why did he do that, knowing he was about to raise Lazarus from the dead? Because death was never part of God’s plan for humanity. To onlookers, Our Lord seemed to confirm it when he wept. Lazarus died and was buried and finally Our Lord came. Lewis would say, “not a tame lion,” using his great power and strength in a way that man can harness, control, or predict. When Mary and Martha sent for Jesus with the urgent message that Lazarus was gravely ill, they hoped - and perhaps expected - him to come without delay and save the day. Thus, even before the spectacular raising of Lazarus, that trio of saints gave glory to Jesus. He wants us to invite him to stay with us, and to serve him and to listen to him, as Lazarus and his sisters did. He technically owned every place in the universe, right? But he wanted to go where he was welcome, to stay where people made room for him. “Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.” (Matthew 8:20) Consider what this meant to Jesus, who had no home of his own. Jesus often stayed with him and his two sisters, Mary and Martha, when he was passing through Bethany. It is also important to point out who Lazarus was to Our Lord. They point to him, as the resurrection of Lazarus points to Our Lord. The saints are not – as some misinformed critics believe – in competition with Our Lord. Son of God, wonderful in the saints, save us who sing to you: Alleluia.Ĭould the Catholic doctrine of the role of the saints be any clearer? It is the Son of God who alone saves and it is the saints who give him glory. The Divine Liturgy affirms it in this weekday hymn, often sung on a saint’s feast day: “This illness is not to end in death, but is for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” (John 11:4) The raising of Lazarus also shows a key Catholic doctrine, that God is glorified in his saints. (Lazarus Saturday, triodion by Emperor Leo) Lazarus became the saving first-fruits of the world’s regene ration.Īll things are possible for Thee, O Lord and King of all. Our Lord shows his followers that he has power over death, so that they will believe in his power over his own death. The resurrection of Lazarus is wrapped up in the resurrection of Jesus. Though Lazarus has his own regular brand feast day in October on the Eastern calendar, this is the big one. In the Eastern Rite, this mind blowing event is always commemorated on the day before Palm Sunday, which this year was April 13. It is the day Our Lord summoned his friend back to this life, despite four days and several spools of moldering mummy wrap. Lazarus Saturday celebrates the opposite. Most feast days of the saints celebrate the day the saint died, went to heaven, and stayed put. Block quotes should be single-spaced and indented four spaces from the left margin, and should not use quote marks. Think carefully before using this type of quotation and make sure the entire section you want to quote directly supports your argument. Lengthy quotations (also called block quotes) are used when you want to quote more than three lines of text. On the wall of his room is a “large tinted photograph of his dead wife, who, if Masses willed and paid for out of her own estate could do it, was in Heaven” (99). Put quotation marks around all briefly quoted material, as in this example: Jack was “bent double” with his “nose only a few inches from the humid earth” tracking the trail of the pig “dog-like…on all fours” (Golding 48)īrief quotations are fewer than three lines and should be carefully introduced and integrated into your writing. Details should be short-a word or phrase–and they should be incorporated into your own sentences. Specific details uses words or phrases from the text to support your argument. Lengthy quotes-quoting 4 or more sentences at one time (you will unlikely use this type of quoting in this course).Specific details-quoting words or phrases. There are three levels of direct quoting: As with all the textual evidence, make sure you explain how the quote is connected to your point - let the reader know the significance of the quotations you use. It is the most convincing evidence of the four types as they add credibility to the point you are trying to make. It’s useful when you want to capture the particular language an author uses. Quotations illuminate your ideas and support your argument using the exact words from the original text. See the examples at the bottom of the page. Paraphrasing should be written in your own words, include a page number, and be followed by a statement explaining its importance and connection to the topic sentence. A paraphrase focuses concisely on a single main idea. It is useful when you need more detail than a summary but less than a direct quote. Paraphrasing is also putting someone else’s words into your own words. Summaries should be written in your own words, include a page number, and be followed by a statement explaining its importance and connection to the topic sentence. It is rarely used in the body of a literary analysis essay other than to provide some context when it is needed. Summarizing literary fiction usually occurs in the introduction of a literary analysis essay. It’s useful when you want to point to a larger section of text but do not need the details of the original text. Summarizing is putting someone else’s words into your own words. It’s useful when you want to point to point something out to support a point you’re tying to make but don’t feel a summary, paraphrase or direct quote is necessary. See the chart at the bottom of this page for examples. Referencing is mentioning a particular event or action in the text. Read through the types below and decide which one best fits your need. The most common type of textual evidence is quoting. The types are listed from using general evidence (referencing) to very to specific evidence (quoting). There are four types of textual evidence: referencing, summarizing, paraphrasing, and quoting. Be followed by an “connection” that explains the relationship of the evidence to your main point.
